Webinar: Are Labour Regimes Keeping Up with the Gig Economy?

3:30 - 5:00 PM (India Standard Time)

Online (MS Teams)

The world of work is changing rapidly and the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating this trend. Less than two decades ago, hailing a cab meant standing on the side of the street and waving one down. Food delivery was limited to restaurants that could afford delivery personnel, and business process outsourcing conjured images of young professionals in call centres busily tending to ringing phones. Today, consumers in search of these services conveniently connect to service providers through digitally mediated platforms.

The rise of the platform economy and the associated ecosystem of digital work are upending the way people live and work. The pace of this transformation exceeds the capacity of regulatory institutions to keep up.

Cenfri and the JustJobs Network, with support from the Emerging Markets Sustainability Dialogues programme (EMSD) at the German Development Corporation (GIZ) are launching a study that, with the help of case studies in Africa and Asia, sheds light on employment, working conditions and labour and policy regimes for platform workers.

Join us for a webinar to discuss the findings of this study with experts from research and digital platforms. On 1st December, please use this link to join the conversation

The event will be moderated by Georg Schaefer, Sector Project Employment Promotion in Development Cooperation team at GIZ. The following speakers will participate in the webinar:

  • Brigitte Klein, Global Programme Director, Emerging Markets Sustainability Dialogues
  • Sabina Dewan, President and Executive Director, JustJobs Network
  • Albert van der Linden, Engagement Manager, Cenfri
  • Ore Boboye, Chief Operating Officer, Jobberman
  • Madhuranath R., Slang Labs – Head of Sales & Marketing; former Head of Strategy, Ola Supply.
  • Funda Ustek Spilda, Postdoctoral Researcher and Project Manager, Fairwork Foundation
